Gallerist Tina Kim will open “Vintage20: Design For Living,” an exhibition staged as a series of domestic configurations in homage to the design firm Vintage20 and its late founder Jaewoong (Jae) Chung, an expert in midcentury modernism and Kim’s husband. To curate the exhibit, Kim partnered with interior designer Adam Charlap Hyman, founder of the architecture and design practice Charlap Hyman & Herrero. Charlap Hyman has not only worked closely with Tina Kim Gallery since 2011, he also designed Kim and Chung’s Upper West Side townhouse, as well as their Long Island residence.

Vintage20 specialized in mid-century and Art Deco furniture pieces from France. They “created some of the most compelling exhibitions of this material that I have ever seen,” Charlap Hyman tells Surface. “I worked for Jae and Tina on their home when I was just starting as a designer, and Jae’s taste shaped my own in many ways.” With the exhibit’s curation of pieces and their vignette-style presentation, Charlap Hyman says he’s trying to capture “a little bit of the spirit of Vintage20 and its iconic installations over the years.”

Pieces from Kim and Chung’s private collection—including a Jean Prouvé daybed and a Charlotte Perriand credenza—will join additions from Charlap Hyman, as well as Art Deco rugs and sculptures by Alexander Calder and Louise Bourgeois.  Design pieces by Le Corbusier and George Nakashima complement and contrast Moon Jars by contemporary Korean ceramicist Jane Yang D’haene. Together, Kim and Charlap Hyman not only depict the essence of a life, and a home, but they also find a balance between personal narrative and universal design.
